The Challenge
Design a world-class statement of intent that would position Qatar on the global stage ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
As one of the first major milestones following the successful World Cup bid, the One Year To Go countdown clock needed to be more than a timer. It was an opportunity to build anticipation, generate global attention, and create a lasting symbol of Qatar’s ambition, pride, and readiness to host the world’s biggest sporting event.
The challenge was to create a landmark installation that could engage residents, visitors, and international audiences while capturing the excitement leading up to the tournament.
The Concept
Inspired by the official Qatar World Cup emblem, United In Time transformed the countdown clock into a participatory public experience.
The sculptural installation reinterpreted the tournament brand mark as a striking three-dimensional landmark, celebrating both the passage of time and the unifying power of football. At its heart sat a bespoke digital hourglass counting down the days, hours, and moments until kick-off.
Through social media integration, residents and visitors were invited to share their hopes, memories, and celebrations as the tournament approached. These contributions formed a living digital tapestry — an evolving collection of stories and emotions that documented the journey to the World Cup.
The result was a powerful symbol of unity, anticipation, and national pride — a landmark experience that counted down not only the seconds to kick-off, but also the collective journey of a nation preparing to welcome the world.
