The Challenge
Reimagine a traditional Federation-style home within a heritage conservation area in Sydney to better support the lifestyle needs of a modern family, while preserving the character and integrity of the original property.
The challenge was to balance heritage sensitivity with contemporary living by introducing additional space, improved functionality, and natural light, while strengthening the connection between the home and its surrounding garden.
The Concept
The concept focused on creating a timeless family home that blended the elegance of Federation architecture with a more open and contemporary way of living.
The redesigned layout introduced a generous master suite with ensuite, a semi-private home office, and an expansive open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area that became the social heart of the home. Existing bedrooms were refurbished, while integrated storage solutions were seamlessly incorporated throughout to maximise functionality and maintain a calm, refined aesthetic.
Natural light and a strong connection to the landscape became key drivers of the design. Large bifold doors open directly onto a lush landscaped garden, creating a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors and providing a private sanctuary for entertaining and everyday family life.
Carefully considered materials and detailing ensure the new interventions respect the home’s heritage character while introducing a softer contemporary sensibility. The result is a home that feels both timeless and modern, designed for a more connected, flexible, and lifestyle-led way of living.
